About 35 leading scientists from outside ECMWF participated in the workshop on Atmosphere-Ocean Interaction, which took place from 10 to 12 November.
The workshop had the usual format with one and a half days of presentations followed by one day of working group meetings and a plenary discussion. In the talks, recent research was reviewed on air-sea transfer, the impact of waves and currents, the impact of sea ice, the role of the diurnal cycle, the ocean boundary layer, and the ocean circulation. Also the impact of atmosphere/ocean interaction on the atmosphere was discussed e.g. on tropical and extra-tropical cyclones, extreme precipitation, Madden-Julian oscillation, and on monthly and seasonal forecasts.
The working groups made a range of detailed recommendations to guide future research at ECMWF. The workshop particularly endorsed the Centre's plans for further integration of the atmospheric model, the wave model, an oceanic boundary layer model, and the ocean circulation model. The presentations are available here.
