A corporate video about ECMWF has been made available on the ECMWF public web.
The goal of the video is to inform interested audiences about the organisation, its objectives and its wide spectrum of activities in the field of numerical weather prediction.
The video can be watched in English, French and German.
The video points out the socio-economic benefits of ECMWF products to a wide spectrum of applications in ECMWF’s Member and Cooperating States, above all for use by National Hydrometeorological Services as a complement to their national short-range activities. It also reveals the role ECMWF plays in the context of the European meteorological community.
The video emphasises that
- ECMWF uses a highly sophisticated computer modelling technique, called numerical weather prediction (NWP), to forecast the weather;
- ECMWF has pioneered the technique of probabilistic weather forecasting, called ensemble prediction;
- ECMWF’s computer system is one of the largest for meteorology worldwide and contains the world’s largest archive of numerical weather prediction data;
- The increasing amount of satellite data and the development of more sophisticated ways of extracting information from that data have made a major contribution to improving the accuracy and utility of NWP forecasts;
- The ECMWF strategy puts early warning of severe weather events as its principal goal.
