ECMWF will present EU plans on 5 March to develop a high-precision digital model of our planet. The purpose is to create a digital twin of the Earth that will make it possible to explore various natural processes and human activities.

This year’s Annual Seminar is dedicated to the topic of observations. It will run from 12 to 18 September 2021 in Bonn, Germany, and is being held in coordination with the WCRP–WWRP Symposium on Data Assimilation and Reanalysis.

A European programme to build a monitoring and verification support capability for global emissions of carbon dioxide related to human activities entered a new phase in January 2021 to deliver a prototype system by the end of 2023.

Registration and the call for abstracts are now open for this year’s Using ECMWF’s Forecasts (UEF2021) meeting. The UEF2021 theme is ‘Weather in extraordinary circumstances’ and it aims to bring together a diversity of experience and backgrounds to discuss ECMWF products and services.

ECMWF will hold a virtual workshop on ‘weather and climate in the cloud’ from 8 to 10 February 2021. Vasileios Baousis led ECMWF efforts to prepare the computing infrastructure of the European Weather Cloud.

The winter 2020/21 issue of the ECMWF Newsletter is now available. As well as news about ECMWF staff and events, it features articles about new developments and the use that can be made of ECMWF products.

The ECMWF Strategy 2021–2030 will guide our activities over the next ten years. The emphasis is on providing ever more skilful forecasts to our Member and Co-operating States and users around the world. Machine learning will play an important role.

Abstracts for an online workshop on ocean data assimilation to be held from 17 to 20 May 2021 can be submitted until 31 January. The event aims to bring together experts in the field of ocean and coupled data assimilation.
